A Hosehead Makes Up For Lost Time

Somehow I made it through my adolescence never seeing Strange Brew, even though I was a huge SCTV fan, and I was worried that it was too late for me to enjoy it.

Too late?

Well, I feared that the window of maximum enjoyment had passed. Sometimes, silly movies like this are best enjoyed in childhood before the mental pop culture quality censor really starts working. During those years where the internal critic is a gentle, loving soul, it’s easy to fall in love with a movie and that love then carries through the rest of your life so the film continues to be thought of warmly, equal parts nostalgia and genuine affection. Thankfully, none of that mattered as I instantly fell in love with this comedy masterpiece.

Was this movie Swedish?

What?

Swedish. Were they speaking Swedish or something? I couldn’t understand a word.

No, no it was English. Canadian English but it was still in your native tongue. Did you really not understand any of the dialogue?

Not a word and because of that I give it a 3 for tedious boredom. What was it about anyway?

Two guys in a misadventure involving hockey, hops and hijinks. Plus it doubles as a remake of Hamlet with Doug and Bob as Rosencrantz and Gildenstern.

Poppycock.

No it's true. Check it out. These guys are smarter than you think and the movie is unbelievably good, even for a latecomer like me. I can't recommend it enough. Also, Rush approve of it so you know it's quality. Here's some more brilliance:

well well well. looks like we're friends again. props for the hamlet realization - nobody ever knows that. I love this movie. In fact, last halloween i LIVED this movie. Too bad the only recognition was from a homeless guy saying "Hey, you're that retarded guy from Something About Mary." I remember thinking "Man, you would love this movie if you saw it, homeless man." That rat in a beer bottle trick is the best.

p.s. anybody else counting down the days till District 9 comes out? It's 8 by the way. Looks like Cloverfield 2!
